Andy Rowell walked onto the America’s Got Talent stage in 2019 with a karaoke machine and a plan nobody saw coming. Simon Cowell is famously no fan of karaoke acts. Andy knew that.
He picked the song anyway: The Champs’ 1958 classic “Tequila” — a track with exactly one word of lyrics.
For most of the song, Andy just stood there, deadpan, waiting for his cue. Then, with perfect timing, he delivered the single word the crowd was waiting for: “Tequila!”
The room lost it. What started as a skeptical audience turned into a singalong, with people shouting the word right along with him every time it came around. Even Simon — arms crossed, expecting to hate it — ended up laughing and clapping along.
“It was so stupid I loved it,” Cowell told him afterward. Judge Julianne Hough called it brilliant, pointing out how hard it actually is to pull off a reaction like that with almost nothing to work with.
All four judges said yes, sending the Chicago comedian through to the next round.
It’s proof that “talent” on a talent show doesn’t always mean a big voice or a wild stunt — sometimes it’s just knowing exactly how to make a room full of strangers laugh together.
